Birthday invitation wording for children and adults

A child's birthday invitation is written for two people at once: the child who gets excited about it and the parent who reads the details. So it starts light and playful and ends with the time, the place and when to collect. An adult's invitation is close to the opposite, with fewer words and more care in how they sit.

A child's party

Salama is turning five, and she would love you to come and celebrate.

Saturday, 7 November 2026, 4 to 7 pm, in the garden at home, Street 15, Al Khawaneej.

Kids like it when the invitation speaks in their voice:

I'm Rashid and I'm turning six! Come to my party on Friday, 13 November, at 5 pm.

Write down when the party ends. A parent dropping off a child needs to know when to come back, and that one line saves you ten messages.

What parents need to know

Some practical lines earn their place on a children's invitation, as long as there are only a few:

• Clothes, if the party has a theme: "It's a circus party, and costumes are welcome."
• Food, if there's anything parents should know: "We're serving pizza and cake. Let us know about any allergies."
• Swimming, if there's a pool: "Bring a swimsuit."

The reply matters more here than at almost any other event, because the number of children decides everything else: chairs, party bags, slices of cake.

An adult's birthday

For Fatima's thirtieth birthday, join us for a quiet dinner on Thursday, 19 November, at 8:30 pm, at a restaurant on the beach in Dubai.

And if it is a surprise:

A surprise party for Khalid's birthday. Thursday at 8 pm, and please arrive by 8:15. Not a word to him.

That last line isn't decoration. Put it somewhere people will see it.

About gifts

"No gifts, please" is fine on an adult's invitation if it's said kindly: "Your company is the only gift we need." For a children's party, most parents prefer to say nothing about gifts at all.
